Miscommunication - Root Cause of Problems?

People of two opposing ideas can stir up argumentsand fights. It's that situation when one thinkshe has the right concept while the other one also believes he has the proper notion. Both of themwould try to outsmart each other until one claimsvictory. Here's an actual example. My girlfriend Riza would sometimes buy me signatureclothing. When my Mom founds out how much it costs, she would advise us to budget our money and just buy the affordable ones. A problem occurs when Riza thinks that her effortto give me the best was unappreciated....

Recreating Yourself

So it's time for a change. You've taken that hard look in the mirror and you've decided that who you are is not who you want to be. Or perhaps you're standing at a fork in the road and where you'd like to go requires that you make some changes. Maybe you're just really bored with your life as you've been in that same old rut for so long that you just want to scream if you spend another day doing the same amazingly boring things all over again. The reasons for change are as varied as the people making the decision to do so....

Anger: To Control or To Learn

Many of us will do anything to avoid another's anger, yet may be quick to anger ourselves. Many of us dread another's anger yet continue to use our own anger as a way to control others. Let's take a deeper look at what generates our anger and how we can learn from it rather than be at the mercy of it. The feeling anger can come from two different places within us. Anger that comes from an adult, rational place can be called outrage. Outrage is the feeling we have when confronted with injustice....

Belief Management - The Missing Ingredient?

"Joan, I'm working so hard and I'm not getting anything done!" I have heard some version of this cry of frustration by many an entrepreneur. It's a common complaint voiced by those of use who sought the freedom to have complete authority over our schedules, only to find ourselves unwittingly shackled by old ways of operating. It does not appear to matter that we are independent professionals or business owners, we live in a world shaped by the rules of corporate life. Most of us came from jobs and daily schedules that dictated what to do and how to spend our time....

Make a Decision and Take Action!

How are you progressing with the goals you set yourself this year? Have you made a start? Or are you still thinking about it or caught the very popular "I'm too busy" epidemic? Mary's Story Mary runs her own publishing company employing 5 people. She is married with two teenagers. When I first met Mary she told me how stressed out she was trying to juggle work and home effectively. Her business although surviving (just) could have achieved major growth except for one major factor? Mary. She was very disorganised and ran her business that way....

Simple Tips to Move Forward on the Job

Someone I know wants to move into another job in the same company. It is not a management job. It's a job as an assistant safety coordinator. She knows very little about company safety practices at any business. She is ready to learn. The first task she needs to do for herself is to find out why she wants to advocate and prepare herself for a different job. Without a goal directed toward a different job, and specifically directed towards this one, her energy and focus will be superficial. It is important that she write out reasons to make this shift....

Happiness and Work: Your Life Depends On It.

Early one morning, Robert awoke, made his wife of 41 years some banana bread, took out the garbage and called to cancel a doctors appointment scheduled for the next day. He wrote a note to remind his wife to pick up the dry cleaning. All things considered, it seemed like a normal day. Robert had "retired" four years earlier after nearly 40 years doing what he loved in the banking industry. After retirement, his life took a challenging turn. While he remained friendly and encouraging to others on the outside, on the inside he was suffering a deepening depression....

Automatic Brain Works Overtime For You

Use all of your brain to be your most effective. "Running on Automatic" is what I call the ability to visualize what you need to have happen. Automatic because the part of your brain that gives us most of our solutions is working all the time. When you are asleep or not. Most of us call it our subconscience. This part of your brain is processing what your awake aware or cognitive part of the brain is telling it is going on. Our subconscience is not aware of any rational or philosophical system. It just helps us process the stuff we see, feel, smell, taste and hear....

I know you probably have heard of the movie, "The Wizard of Oz" right? Well, for those of you, who have somehow managed to miss this movie, let me give you a brief description of it. W Edwards Deming

Immediately post second world war W Edwards Deming went to Japan to create order from the crisis that was the Japanese economy. In Japan he found fertile ground for a set of ideas that had been around since the twenties. "Quality doesn't cost, It pays" What Deming taught the Japanese was largely common sense. 1. Make sure that people can take pride in what they do. 2. Make sure that you use the intelligence of the workforce. 3. Treat them like human beings. By using a set of basic principles Deming began through his teaching to build quality into Japanese industry instead of having it as a post production bolt on....

Lovers Remorse

Direct Answers - Column for the week of July 29, 2002 A few months after my divorce I started seeing a friend of my ex-wife. She told me I really needed a person that would appreciate me. We had a great sex life, and she told me anytime was fine. I told her I never heard that before, but she said she was different. After a year she asked when we were going to buy a house. I said, "If you want to, we will." I used my money to buy the house, and our sex life changed as soon as we moved in. Her life is now centered around her young son from a previous marriage, and when he goes to bed, she goes to bed....
